How to Make a Rented Flat Feel Like Home

On September 4, 2026     By Daniel Clarke

Renting Doesn't Mean Living in Beige

If your flat came with magnolia walls, a tired carpet and a ceiling light that makes everyone look slightly unwell, you're in very good company. The trick to making a rental feel like yours isn't fighting the tenancy agreement — it's working with it. Everything below is reversible, removable or freestanding, so you can add real character without giving your landlord a reason to keep your deposit.

Before you start, photograph every room as it is now, note any existing marks or chips, and email your letting agent about anything you're unsure of. A quick "I'd like to put up removable wallpaper on one wall — is that alright?" takes two minutes and saves weeks of stress later.

Walls You Can Undo

Removable, peel-and-stick wallpaper is the single biggest change you can make for the smallest risk. Choose one wall — usually the one behind your sofa or bed — rather than a whole room, and pick a pattern you'll still like in two years. Patch-test first: stick a small square in a discreet spot, leave it for a week, then peel it back slowly. Freshly painted or slightly chalky walls are the riskiest; sealed emulsion is usually fine.

  • Washi tape and fabric hangings are gentler still, and great for renters in period flats with older paint.
  • Removable adhesive hooks hold frames, mirrors and small shelves well if you clean the wall first and press firmly for thirty seconds before loading them.
  • Freestanding screens or a leaning mirror break up a long blank wall without a single hole.

Furniture That Comes With You

Anything that stands on the floor is your friend. A tall freestanding bookcase adds height, storage and personality, and it moves house with you. Ladder shelves are slim enough for a hallway or the gap beside a chimney breast. Cube storage units look tidy in a living room and can be stacked or split into two smaller units in your next place.

For alcoves, a tension pole or freestanding wardrobe rail creates hanging space without drilling. Over-door hooks work on most internal doors for coats and bags. If you're short on surfaces, a slim console table behind the sofa gives you somewhere to put a lamp and a bowl of keys.

Soft Furnishings Do the Heavy Lifting

Textiles are where a rental goes from "furnished let" to "home". They're also the cheapest thing to change and the easiest to take with you.

  • Rugs: buy the largest you can reasonably afford. A rug that reaches under the front feet of your sofa makes the room feel intentional rather than temporary, and it softens sound — particularly useful if you're above a neighbour.
  • Cushions and throws: pick a colour palette of three tones and stick to it. Changing covers seasonally refreshes a room for very little money.
  • Curtains: use an extendable tension pole or a twist-and-fit rod so you don't drill. Floor-length curtains make windows look taller, and thermal linings genuinely help with heat loss in older flats.
  • Bedding: two good sets in a pale neutral, plus one textured throw, will make a bedroom feel calmer than any amount of clutter.

Lighting Changes Everything

Most rental ceiling lights are harsh and centrally placed. Switch off the big light and layer instead: a floor lamp in the corner, a small table lamp on a shelf, a rechargeable lamp on a bedside table with no cable in sight. Choose warm white bulbs around 2700K — cool white is what makes a room feel like an office.

Plug-in dimmer switches and timer plugs cost very little and make a huge difference to how a room feels at 9pm. Removable LED strips under kitchen cabinets or behind a headboard add a soft glow without touching the wiring. If a socket is awkwardly placed, an extension lead hidden behind furniture solves it neatly.

Small Details, Greener Habits

Plants are the fastest way to make a room feel alive. Devil's ivy, spider plants and snake plants tolerate low light and irregular watering, and a few herbs on the windowsill earn their keep in the kitchen.

Sustainable renting means buying less and buying better. Local marketplaces, charity shops and community noticeboards are full of solid wood furniture that will outlast anything flat-packed. When you do buy new, look for FSC-certified timber and natural fibres such as wool, cotton and jute. Cotton curtains with thermal linings, a draught excluder at the front door, LED bulbs and washing at 30 degrees all reduce bills without upsetting your landlord.

Leaving It Better Than You Found It

Keep the original light fittings, curtain poles and shelf brackets in a labelled box so they can go back at the end of the tenancy. When you leave, remove your adhesive hooks slowly with a hairdryer on a low setting to warm the glue, fill any small holes with a little decorator's filler, and touch up with a matchpot of the original colour if you can identify it.

Do that, and you'll hand back a flat that looks every bit as good as the day you moved in — with a deposit returned in full and a set of habits, furniture and soft furnishings ready for your next home.

Make the most of a compact outdoor space with vertical planters, window boxes, and easy-care herbs that thrive in British weather conditions.
